Your doctor has recommended a cardiac catheterization. This handout explains what the procedure involves, how to
prepare, and what to expect afterward.
What is it? A cardiac catheterization is a procedure where a thin tube is guided through a blood vessel to
your heart, so your doctor can check how well your heart is working.
Before your procedure: You may be asked not to eat or drink for several hours beforehand. Bring a list of
your current medications.
After your procedure: Most people go home the same day or the next morning. You'll need someone to drive
you home.
